Welcome to Three Left Feet Media!

My name is D.L. Holmes, and I’d like to talk to you about movies.

This newsletter will cover origin stories behind a movie, examine chapters of history in cinema, analyze scenes from a movie, and maybe even study a screenplay.

Who is this newsletter for?

If you are:

  • A casual movie lover

  • A serious cinephile

  • A filmmaker or aspiring filmmaker

And if you:

  • Live and breathe cinema

  • Like learning how a certain film came together, or why a filmmaker made certain artistic choices

Then this newsletter is for you!

Why does this matter?

I see cinema’s existence as an art form is at stake. I fear that in my lifetime, only a narrow selection of people will be able to watch and appreciate the range of movies made in the last hundred years, which will affect the kind of movies being made. I think part of the problem is that cinematic literacy is slowly eroding because film criticism and discourse is either academically dry or superficial clickbait (and sometimes, deeply offensive and problematic).

I believe that the solution is to share knowledge and make films accessible by talking about it with passion, honesty, and a healthy dose of in-depth research. Sometimes, all it takes is unabashed enthusiasm to inspire another person to learn and love a subject.

Fun, but why should I subscribe?

I’ve wanted to make films since I was a kid. But I didn’t have access to film school.

I did, however, have access to a lot of books, long-form articles, interviews, and podcasts. Combined with my daily reading of the trades to learn what is happening in the industry, I have accumulated a large knowledge about cinema. Sometimes, I’ll remember more stuff about movies than I do about people that it’s almost embarrassing.

And I would like to share what I know with you.

So subscribe and help to keep the cinematic discourse alive!
